Motivation and positivity. Some days you have them and other days you don't. Some days you wake up ready to take on the day and other days you want to stay in bed, Netflix and chill on our own. Don't worry you're human and it's normal to experience fluctuations in your motivation and positivity. But there are days where you can't afford to be a Debbie Downer and need your motivation and positivity muscles to kick a little better, faster stronger. And I have a few tricks to help you speed up a slump and get out of a funk faster.
Now before I jump into my tips, I want to preface this by saying, I'm not a doctor and I've never played one on T.V. If you suspect that what you're experiencing may be more than a temporary funk or general bad mood, go see a medical professional. If you suspect that you may be experiencing depression seek professional help. But if you are simply have a bad day for example and need to turn things around here is what I do.
FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT! In the morning when you wake up to you kind want to get out of bed or do you want to jump out of bed and seize the day I would ideally prefer to do the latter. It is actually my general stay in the morning ~ energized, positive and ready to get to work. But for days where my energy is off or I'm just not my 'Matthew Romeo' self, I act the way I want to feel ~ energized, positive and ready to get to work and eventually I actually become those things. Again if you are experiencing depression no amount of "faking it" will help you. But if you're just going through a bad day or someone said something mean to you, or you are stressed, I find that acting the way I want to feel for an hour or so will get me back to feeling motivated and positive faster than I expected.
CONTROL YOUR ENVIRONMENT! Have you ever been in a situation where you've started your day of right and then you went to school or work and the vibes just put you in a bad mood A negative comment by one person can turn your whole day upside down if you let it. That's why it's important to control your environment and be aware of the energy around you. Constant exposure to negativity will eventually rub off on you and we don't want that. There are two things I do to control my environment and keep it positive. First I get rid of any Negative Nellies. These are people who being the company of misery. They either mean, negative or cynical one hundred per cent of the time and there is no turning back for them. They love gossip and criticizing others behind their backs. And if this is what makes them happy they are welcome to do so... just not in my environment. So I control that space by eliminating as many interactions with these people. Instead I seek out people who are just as passionate about what they do as I am and who are too busy for gossip. The second thing I do comes in handy when I have to interact with negative people despite my best efforts to avoid them. If they can't be positive, I bring enough positivity for the both of us. It is known that in a conversation, the person you are talking to will mimic your energy. If you're frowning, they frown. If you smile, they smile. And if you yawn, well we all know how that goes. It is difficult to be mean or speak poorly of others when the person you are speaking to is overwhelmingly positive, cheerful and uplifting. If you've ever met me you'll easily agree that that is my general demeanour. I love to see someone cheer up when I speak with them. So I control my environment simply by setting the tone myself. And by taking the initiative to do that myself, I can ensure that my environment is full of conversations that keep me motivated and positive.
So if you find yourself having a bad day, try acting in the way you want to feel and controlling your environment to ward off negativity. And don't hesitate to seek professional help if you need to.
